SF Beer Week Collab-a-Palooza

For San Francisco Beer Week this year we really went deep on the collabs and brewed some really special beers with a few of our favorite brewers. Some really good ideas got put on the table, and execution was excellent across the board. We were hosts to Cellarmaker and Urban Roots, and hit the road to brew at Karl Strauss and Humble Sea. Great beers made with great people! All four of these final products will be available on draft starting Saturday, 2/2 at Drake’s Barrel House, while supplies last.

HAZY HUNDO WITH URBAN ROOTS

1500-INSPIRED HAZY DOUBLE IPA, 8% ABV

Urban Roots Brewmaster and industry treasure Peter Hoey has long been a fan of 1500 Pale Ale, so we decided to use that as a base inspiration for a hazy double IPA. We took the base 1500 recipe, increased the gravity/ABV to double IPA strength, and added raw wheat for more body and texture. The hops stayed the same (Simcoe, Amarillo, Cascade, Lemondrop and Mandarina), but were increased dramatically in the dry-hope. The soul of Hundo in a hazy double!

THE OATER LIMITS WITH CELLARMAKER

OATWINE WITH GUAVA AND HEAVY-HANDED HOP ADDITIONS FEATURING MOSAIC, 10% ABV

Tim Sciascia, Brewmaster of Cellarmaker, threw a truly wild idea at us–make an Oatwine (think barleywine, but with the primary fermentable being oats rather than barley), juice it up with some guava purée, and hop it aggressively with Mosaics (complemented by some Idaho 7 and Jarrylo). A big beer at 10% ABV, with big flavors to go with it. This beer will be available in 16oz cans at Drake’s Barrel House on Saturday, 2/2.

FROSTY NUGZ WITH HUMBLE SEA

DANK WHEAT DOUBLE IPA, 8.5% ABV

We’ve been fans of Humble Sea since they opened, and we were excited to have a chance to get together and make a beer with them! We made a very wheat-forward double IPA using a combination of red wheat, white wheat and flaked wheat, on a base of British Maris Otter. Hopped with Moutre, Simcoe, Columbus and Hallertauer Blanc for maximum dankness.

LEVEL 30 COMPLETE WITH KARL STRAUSS

HAZY AMERICAN IPA, 7% ABV

Karl Strauss said it best: “1989’s greatest creation had to be the GameBoy–but hey, the opening of a couple scrappy breweries could be a close second.” Our collaboration beer with this fellow 30-year-old brewery is an intensely hopped, unfiltered American IPA bursting with citrus, sweet fruit aromas and flavors, with a round, full finish. They made this video of our brew day.
