Drinking & Streaming with Drake’s Beer

Like many of us sheltering-in-place, your go-to streaming site has probably commandeered a whole lot more of your time lately. Social distancing means every night is movie night, so we decided to compile a few of our favorite film and beer pairings for your (alcoholic) entertainment.

Blazing Saddles (1973)

BEER PAIRING: Black Robusto Porter

Truly a movie of its time, Mel Brooks lampoon of American Western movies be chock full of outlandish and outrageous humor. You can’t make a movie like this anymore, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t throw it on the stream and enjoy a roasty porter. We recommend eating a bowl of chili beans as well for a perfect thematic pairing. Pro tip: double up with our Drakonic Imperial Stout in the latter half of the film when things completely go off the rails.

Strange Brew (1983)

BEER PAIRING: Flyway Pils

This very sudsy 80s comedy features Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as two unemployed brothers who con their way into brewery jobs, only to discover the brewmaster’s diabolical plot to take over the world. Many beers are consumed along the way! If you want to match their pace, we recommend pairing this movie with Flyway Pilsner. It’s easy-drinking, but far from being a watered-down macro beer. Enjoy subtle fruity and herbal notes, with a crisp dry finish at the end.

Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)

BEER PAIRING: Aroma Coma IPA

Inspired by grindhouse cinema, this epic Tarantino martial arts masterpiece is bursting with expertly crafted violence. Don’t be fooled by the misleadingly light comedy/action trailer! Uma Thurman slays as a badass assassin who awakens from a four-year coma to seek revenge on the team that betrayed her. No beer pairs better with her vengeance than the 8% citrus hop assault that is Aroma Coma. Inhale, exhale, sit tight for this gorefest of a film.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

BEER PAIRING: Best Coast IPA

Don’t know about y’all, but we really thought the viral outbreak that would change the world forever would surely have something to do with zombies. In these all too often shitty times, a bit of humor is just what’s needed to balance the bitter truth of our new existence. Initially released 16 years ago, Simon Pegg’s best film (don’t @ us Hot Fuzz fans) pairs impeccably with our Best Coast IPA. Just for funsies, here’s a modern message from the film’s stars.

Hot Rod (2007)

BEER PAIRING: Denogginizer Double IPA

Andy Samberg’s first feature-length film may have flopped at the box office, but the saga of self-proclaimed stuntman Rob Kimble is now a glorious cult classic. Bizarre, offbeat and absurdist, what better way to go BOLD than to pair this comedy with Denogginizer Double IPA. Crack open a couple and you’ll be feeling “cool beans” in no time!

STREAM: Netflix, Prime Video

The Cabin In The Woods (2011)

BEER PAIRING: 1500 Pale Ale

You may be stuck at home, but at least you’re not stuck at this cabin. Scary, strange and highly satirical, this comedic horror film is 95 minutes of genre-bending perfection that you didn’t know you needed. Press play, open a 1500 and let its piney punch transport you to the woods. Just keep an eye out to make sure there’s not a zombie redneck torture family sneaking up behind you…

STREAM: Hulu, Prime Video

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

BEER PAIRING: Kick Back IPA

If you’re one of the #blessed folks with an HBO Go password, Hobbs & Shaw is the mind-melting explosion of good/bad action movie madness that you deserve. Crack a can (or six) of Kick Back IPA and drink in the thirst trap that is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham battling a cyber-genetically enhanced Idris Elba. Come for the sweepingly cinematic action sequences and inevitable car chase(s), stay for the gratuitous ball jokes and Samoan warfare.
