Macho Man Razzy Savage, Ooh Yeah!
Barrel Program Manager, Travis Camacho, launches from the top rope to deliver a flying elbow on our latest limited can release, Macho Man Razzy Savage.
I heard it all growing up, Big T, Trav-Nasty, Macho, Macho Camacho, Comanche, or just the shortened version of Macho: Mach. For some reason people just love making up nicknames for me, mostly riffing on my last name, Camacho. I’m guessing mostly because it has “Macho” in it, and there was a professional boxer, Hector “Macho Camacho,” that people are most familiar with, as well as THE Macho Man himself, Randy Savage.
It’s quite a common surname in Puerto Rico and Mexico, but here in the U.S. it’s uncommon enough, that people seemingly gravitate towards it, thinking it’s interesting and fun. Similar to my nicknames, many Drake’s beer names begin over drinks and bullshitting among friends. One night at the taproom, while thinking of a name for our Raspberry Kettle Sour, the name “Macho Man Razzy Savage” just slipped out. We knew we couldn’t call it anything else.
A couple of years ago, Drake’s gave the brewers a chance to brew whatever they wanted for a release. It was kind of a monthly rotating tap. Being the “king of kettle sours” at Drake’s, I wanted to resurrect an award winning homebrew recipe I’d never gotten the chance to brew professionally.
It sounds a little weird, and maybe that is why people like it, but it’s pretty much a kettle soured English Mild with raspberries. The malt is sweet and fruity, to compliment the raspberry fruit and yeast esters. The acid from kettle souring bolsters the fruit acid, for a bright, zippy take on a Mild ale. Overall, it’s not a very “Macho” beer, but I’m not that much of a “Macho” man either. I just look mean on the outside. Give it a try, I bet you feel the need to say “Ooh Yeah” at least once. It’s just too much fun.
